Identity for B2B SaaS: what the product needs at each stage

The identity requirements of a B2B SaaS product as it grows: tenants and roles first, then session policy, audit, SSO and provisioning for enterprise deals.

The short answer

A B2B SaaS product needs tenant-aware identity from the first customer: users that belong to organizations, isolation between them, and administrators who can manage their own people. As customers grow, they add requirements — per-tenant session and password policy, audit trails, SSO with their identity provider, automated provisioning — and those arrive through security questionnaires rather than feature requests.

First customers

  • Tenants, memberships and roles.
  • Isolation you can explain in a security review.
  • Invitations and a first-administrator flow.
  • Sign-in with email and password or one-time codes, with sensible session lifetimes.

Mid-market customers

  • Per-tenant policy: session lifetimes, password rules, MFA requirements.
  • Session inventory and administrator revocation.
  • API access for the customer's own integrations — machine clients, not shared user passwords.

Enterprise customers

  • SAML or OIDC federation with their IdP, and SSO enforcement.
  • SCIM provisioning and deprovisioning.
  • Custom login domains and branding.
  • Evidence: audit logs, a security page, and honest answers about certifications.
